Gabe Tardio: The Young Pro Taking Pickleball by Storm in 2025
At just 22 years old, Gabe Tardio is emerging as one of the top professional pickleball players to watch in 2025. Known for his aggressive right-side play, high-spin creativity, and rapid climb in the rankings, Tardio represents the sport’s next wave of elite talent.
From first hitting pickleball balls on a court his grandfather built in Bolivia to now sharing the court with pickleball legend Ben Johns, Gabe’s story is a mix of dedication, skill, and a refreshing approach to competition.
Early Beginnings in Pickleball
Gabe’s introduction to pickleball was unique. At 14, living in Bolivia, his grandfather built two courts where family gatherings included swimming, volleyball, and pickleball matches.
In 2019, Gabe moved to Florida to pursue tennis, but COVID-19 shutdowns closed many training facilities. With pickleball courts in his grandparents’ community, he began playing more often—initially just for enjoyment and prize money from small events.
Rapid Rise Through the Ranks
Unlike many pros, Gabe didn’t commit to pickleball full-time until about two years ago:
“I never thought about going far. I just wanted to get better.”
That mindset has taken him to the top seven men’s doubles ranking in the world and secured him a partnership with Ben Johns for much of the 2025 season.
Playing Style & Key Strengths
- Right-Side Specialist – One of the few top-tier players to focus on mastering the right side
- Aggressive & Creative – Uses spin, quick hands, and constant pressure to disrupt opponents
- Consistent Return Game – Relies on a deep slice return for stability and control
- Dedicated Training – Maintains a 70% drilling, 30% match play training split
Mindset & Training Philosophy
For younger players, Gabe’s advice is clear:
- Focus on improvement, not rankings – Consistency matters more than chasing numbers
- Experiment and take risks – Try new strategies during practice to expand your game
- Study the sport – Watch match footage daily to learn patterns and shot selection
Life as a Pro Pickleball Player
Off the court, Gabe lives simply—still at home with his parents, avoiding flashy purchases, and investing in training and travel. He emphasizes balance and enjoyment to avoid burnout, seeing tournaments as both competition and community.
Paddle Sponsorship & Gear
Gabe signed early with an international paddle brand that believed in his potential before his big wins:
“They signed me when I had no wins… It’s a good paddle with a lot of grit and I’ve stayed loyal.”
Future Goals
- Win multiple titles alongside Ben Johns
- Improve mixed doubles performance
- Become equally strong on both left and right sides
- Break into the top five and eventually reach world No. 1
Why Gabe Loves Pickleball
Gabe compares pickleball to chess—fast-paced yet strategic:
“Power isn’t everything. You have to think, have a game plan, and play smart.”
