New UPA-A paddle standards for juniors and senior pros
The UPA-A Has Spoken. The Paddles Must Change.
In this game we call pickleball, respect is everything. And respect starts with the right equipment. The UPA-A — the United Pickleball Association — has made its decision, and wise players will listen closely.
These new paddle standards aren't rules for the sake of rules. They're a promise. A promise that every junior finding their footing on the court, and every senior pro who has earned their place through years of play, will be protected, respected, and given a fair shot.
Why the Family Needed New Rules
The game has grown. The family has grown. And when the family grows, the old ways don't always serve the new members the way they should.
Juniors play differently than veterans. Senior pros carry wisdom in their wrists — and sometimes, wear and tear too. One paddle standard for everyone? That's not fairness. That's laziness. The UPA-A understood this, and they acted accordingly.
What Has Been Decided
On the matter of weight, the UPA-A has been precise. Juniors will carry paddles between 6.5 and 8.0 ounces — light enough to move quickly, develop skill, and not strain young arms. Senior pros will play with paddles between 7.5 and 8.5 ounces — heavier, yes, but in the right way. Power. Control. Authority on the court.
On the matter of materials, only the finest will do. Graphite composites — strong, light, reliable — remain the standard for both groups. Core materials must now meet strict density requirements. This means every ball rebound, every shot, every moment of play is consistent and fair across the board.
On the matter of surface, there is wisdom in the difference. Junior paddles may carry a slightly rougher texture — this helps young players grip the ball, learn control, and build their technique properly. Senior pros play on smoother surfaces, built for power and precision. Every player gets what they need. Nothing more. Nothing less.
What This Means for You
If you coach, you now have a clear guide. Choose your players' equipment with confidence.
If you're a parent, you know what to ask for when you walk into that shop.
If you're a senior pro, know that your years of service to this game have been recognized. Your equipment will protect your joints and honor your skill.
And if you're a junior — welcome. The family has made room for you.
The UPA-A didn't make these changes lightly. This is their commitment: that pickleball remains fair, safe, and built for everyone willing to put in the work. The paddles have changed. Now pick yours up, and play with respect. Try ours at www.godfatherpickleball.com today!
